Portulacaria Prostrata Cutting

Meet the plant

Groundcover spekboom from R10

A groundcover spekboom cutting ready to root: tough, water-wise and easy. · also known as Portulacaria afra (prostrate form, sold as 'Prostrata' or 'Minima')

Native to Groundcover spekboom, groundcover jade, dwarf spekboom

Eastern and southern South Africa (the species)

  • A 10 to 15cm cutting of the low, spreading spekboom.
  • A tough, water-wise groundcover that suits rockeries, banks and pots.
  • Spekboom is one of the easiest succulents to root, so it's ideal for beginners.

Where it thrives

The best spot in your home

A fresh cutting of the low-growing spekboom, which creeps sideways rather than growing into a shrub. It forms a dense, green mat over time.

Care card

Care made simple

Your first weeks together

  1. Leave the cutting somewhere dry and shaded for 1 to 3 days so the cut end can dry and seal.
  2. Push the bottom 2 to 3cm into a small pot of barely moist succulent mix and firm it in.
  3. Keep it in bright, indirect light and water lightly only once the mix is dry. Roots usually form in 2 to 4 weeks.

Plant doctor

If you see this, do this

  • Cut end turning black and softIt's rotting from too much water. Trim above the soft part, let it dry for a few days and replant in dry mix.
  • Leaves wrinkling while rootingNormal for a few weeks: the cutting lives off its stored water until roots form.
  • No new growth after a monthBe patient. Gently tug it: if it resists, roots have formed and growth will follow.

Questions

Good to know

What exactly will I receive?

A fresh 10 to 15cm stem cutting with leaves, ready for you to root. The length is a guide and it won't look like the full plant yet. Every plant is unique; the photo shows the size to expect.

How do I know it has rooted?

After 2 to 4 weeks, tug it gently. If it resists, it has roots and you can start watering normally.

Will it grow into a tall spekboom?

No. This is the prostrate form: it stays low and spreads, so it's ideal as a groundcover or trailing over a pot.
